After the Christmas pies have been eaten and we have seen the New Year in, we shall be meeting virtually on Wednesday 26 January for this year’s Board Member Academy.

With an increasing number of board members that are new to the sector and possibly taking on their first governance roles, it is essential that non-executives are well informed and supported to enable them to take advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges of governance.

There’s a lot to consider, such as the continuing challenges from the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower around health and safety assurance, how we enable our residents to have real influence on the direction of the organisation, how we continue to provide affordable homes, while also gearing up for a zero carbon future.

The Board Member Academy provides an excellent platform for attendees to consider these and other challenges that we face. We will also explore how we interact with the government and government agencies and the wider social housing ecosystem that impacts on our residents, such as local authorities and the health and care sectors.

I will be considering these issues along with Sean Anstee of Trafford Housing and Jane McCall of Peaks and Plains Housing at the opening session. Sarah Finnegan of the National Housing Federation will be chairing the event and inviting your questions.

It promises to be a stimulating and informative day and before you finish those mince pies, book your place and jot down that question. I look forward to seeing you.

The Board Member Academy will be held as a virtual event on Wednesday 26 January. Find out more and book your places online.

The Academy is part of the annual Board Excellence in Housing Conference which takes place virtually on 3-4 February.
